His passing was no surprise, but hopes of saving the sub-species somewhat died with him. Unfortunately, due to poaching, the NWR population is now down to only two females. Sudan’s daughter Najin and her daughter, Fatu, both of who live in Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) in Kenya. • July 4th was a day of excitement for many — researchers announced the successful creation of hybrid white-rhino embryos. The embryos were produced using a female southern white rhino and a male northern white rhino. The breakthrough has given researches hope that soon a rhino with purely NWR genetics can be created. Following the successful harvest of 10 eggs from the world’s last two northern white rhinos, Najin and Fatu, on Thursday, August 22nd, we are happy to announce that 7 eggs (4 from Fatu and 3 from Najin) were on Sunday, August 25th, successfully matured and artificially inseminated through ICSI (Intra Cytoplasm Sperm Injection) with frozen sperm from northern white rhino bulls, Suni and Saut. Scientists involved in this procedure had to thaw two batches of semen to find three live sperms needed to fertilise Najin's egg, as semen from Saut proved difficult to work with. View this post on Instagram BREAKING NEWS — WE NOW HAVE TWO NORTHERN WHITE RHINO EMBRYOS! We are happy to announce that two northern white rhino embryos have been successfully matured and fertilised. This development marks a turning point in the race to save the northern white rhino from near extinction. The two embryos were created using eggs collected from Fatu, the youngest of the two northern white rhinos and frozen sperm from Suni a deceased northern white rhino male. The embryos are now stored in liquid nitrogen and will be transferred into a surrogate southern white rhino female in the near future. To make this procedure a reality, Fatu’s eggs were injected with Suni’s sperm while Najin’s eggs were injected with Saut’s sperm. Saut’s semen was of really poor quality and scientists had to thaw additional samples to find viable sperms for the procedure. Unfortunately, Najin’s eggs did not make it to a viable embryo despite the fact that one egg initiated segmentation. In a joint effort by Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Avantea, Dvùr Královē Zoo and KWS, a team of veterinarians successfully harvested 10 eggs from Najin (5 eggs) and Fatu (5 eggs) on Thursday 22nd August 2019. After this successful harvest, 7 eggs (4 from Fatu and 3 from Najin) were on August 25th, successfully matured and artificially inseminated with frozen sperm previously harvested from northern white rhino bulls Suni and Saut.
